The Santa Maria Times noted in its August 25, 2005, article that Santa Maria city officials had agreed to receive 860,000 cubic yards of contaminated dirt from the Nipomo-Guadalupe Dunes, dumping it at the city's landfill. According to retired attorney, Dan Kirk, the San Luis Obispo board of supervisors had agreed to pay Santa Maria $12.5 million for this service. The Tin Soldier commented on this in the post titled SLO Dumps Toxic Dirt on Santa Maria.
The Times noted in its August 25th article that, "One group of residents has filed an appeal with the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors because they feel residents of Santa Barbara County were excluded from the decision-making process."
Kirk said, "Basically [we filed] because the public did not get any notice of the EIR and its effects."
