In its January 15, 2006, opinion commentary on the county split, the Santa Maria Times states that the ". . . reason for splitting appears to have diminished if not evaporated."
After stating its concern that, "The idea that a Mission County would begin life $30 million in the hole certainly has to give one serious pause about the wisdom of creating a new county," the Times goes on to state that, "This all began as a response to North County citizens being tired of being pushed around politically by South Coast interests."
The Times continues with, "But with the swing of population and political clout to the north in the past couple of years -- three of the five members of the county Board of Supervisors live in the North County -- that reason for splitting appears to have diminished if not evaporated."
One Tin Soldier agrees.
