The September 3, 2002, article in the Santa Maria Times quotes Jim Diani as saying that "The organization (Citizens for County Organization -- supporting the proposed County Split) will back off from the split movement if the study finds a split to be economically unreasonable."
The Times quotes Diani as saying that "the role of the organization will be to educate the public on the results of the study."
Joan Leon's commentary of May 5, 2006, in the Santa Maria Times reminds us that this original study found that a new county would face an $11.5 million deficit, with raised taxes and reduced government services as the only way to overcome this deficit.
Yet Diani's organization continued on, with a second study concluding that the deficit would be even more -- $30 million.
What happened to your promise, Jim?
