Well, it looks like the Santa Maria City Council election is off and running. The first cannon shot has been fired.
George Dailey states in his Santa Maria Times letter to the editor of September 10, 2006, that both Joan Leon and Hilda Zacarias should be voted into office, replacing current council members Marty Mariscal and Alice Patino.
In addition to citing the "well-entrenched interests in Santa Maria behind anything of consequence for developers and big money," and "the county split initiative that cost local taxpayers millions of dollars to defeat," Dailey also mentions the "ill-conceived notion that trucking thousands of loads of contaminated (Guadalupe) sand through our city . . . to cap an old landfill was an easy way to make money for the city coffers . . . ."
Dailey concludes by saying, "In view of what this council has done, why would anyone in their right mind vote to retain them in office? Santa Maria deserves better representation than this."
One Tin Soldier agrees.
Mr. Mariscal called Mr. Dailey early the morning Mr. Dailey's letter was printed. He was very angry and said the letter was lies. He was especially angry about the county split comment and said the soil from Guadalupe was NOT contaminated. Mr. Dailey asked him why it had to be moved if not contaminated and Mr. Mariscal said the soil was just "dirty" soil.
