I've just been handed the smoking gun material on the issue of the diluent-contaminated Guadalupe soil being transferred to the SM landfill, which sits over the water basin for the Santa Maria Valley.
It seems up-for-re-election City Councilman Marty Mariscal wrote a guest commentary to the Santa Maria Times on September 24, 2006, titled Tainted Soil Program Win/Win for City, claiming that the Guadalupe soil is "safe".
On September 28, 2006, Lynn Melville submitted a guest commentary to the Times, in rebuttal to Mariscal's claims. As she tells it, she was first told by the Times that her commentary couldn't be published for 30 days, because a letter to the editor from her was published on September 28th.
On September 27th, she was informed that no, even though 30 days were up the next day, they weren't going to publish her commentary.
The Tin Soldier has been given a copy of Melville's commentary, which breaks open the news that the 1999 Coastal Commission report stated that 60 percent of the Guadalupe Dunes soil is contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals.

No wonder the Santa Maria Times readership has been declining. Who wants to read a paper that doesn't print the truth?
