The April 13, 2007, issue of the Los Angeles Times published an insightful opinion piece by Tim Rutten regarding Don Imus and his racist comment on his radio program about the Rutgers University women's basketball team.
Imus' vulgar and racist insult to the women triggered a national level of outrage, forcing the American public to look more carefully at his history of insulting and disparaging not only African Americans but Jews and gays.
The responsible consequence of looking honestly at Imus and his demeaning behavior has justifiably resulted in his being fired.
Again, the Tin Soldier asks where the citizens of Santa Maria were last December, when the men and women of the Santa Maria Police Department felt their only recourse regarding the racist behavior of their boss, Police Chief Danny Macagni, was to go to the Santa Maria Sun with the story.
Danny Macagni's comments on what he called "stupid wetbacks, damned Mexicans, niggers and chinks" were far worse than what Don Imus said.
We have an Imus among us.
