Reliable sources are reporting to One Tin Soldier that Police Chief Danny Macagni was to be asked to resign at a recent Santa Maria City Council meeting (see Joe Walsh's comment on the SMPD OFFICERS ACCUSE MACAGNI post on this blog).
Walsh's comment states that even before the City Council meeting, Police Chief Danny Macagni defiantly made it known that he refused to step down.
Sounds like the Council members and City Manager Rick Haydon are beginning to listen to the public.
The Chief Under Fire article in the Santa Maria SUN isue of February 10, 2012, reported on the most recent City Council meeting, stating that several people in the audience held up signs reading "Investigate Chief Macagni".
Many others presented their demands directly to the Council.
Richard Soto, cousin of slain officer Albert Covarrubias Jr ., called for the firing of Police Chief Danny Macagni, stating that, "I'm here to give you a chance to do the right thing by firing Chief Macagni before I submit my complaint to the Department of Justice. . . . Now is the time to make it happen."
Hazel Pfutney, organizing director of the activist group PUEBLO, was adamant when she said, "We don't know all the details of this case, but the recent shooting of Officer Covarrubias is not the first display of Chief Macagni's incompetence."
Terri Zuniga, who announced her own candidacy for Santa Maria City Council on February 8, warned the council of the costs of potential future lawsuits. She also put the Council on notice that if action against Macagni weren't taken, they risked making the recent shootings an election issue.
Tom Radzyminski, a current member of the Santa Maria Police Officers Association, spoke on behalf of the union board of directors, when he stated, "Multiple personnel complaints have been made against the Santa Maria Police Department administration, and nothing changes. The city has paid out huge amounts of money to settle law suits which have been filed and nothing happens. What more is it going to take?" [emphasis added]
By refusing to resign, it looks like Police Chief Danny Macagni has set up a good ol' fashioned shootout at the OK Corral right here in Santa Maria -- the citizens, the officers of his own department and now even the City Council . . . against lone cowboy Danny.
Wouldn't you think that after multiple officers of the Police Department reported to the City Council Chief Macagni's racial slurs (see "stupid wetbacks" and "damned Mexicans" on this blog), and then a citizen's' complaint was filed with the Council which reported the sweeping under the rug by Chief Macagni of possible drug thefts by his own officers, plus the bungled arrest and killing of Covarrubias -- and then 85% of all the officers in the whole police department silent balloted a no confidence vote in him (the people he oversees don't want him as their leader !!!!) -- that he'd be ever so grateful to just resign -- instead of being fired?
One Tin Soldier thinks he's out gunned in this shootout.
