Looks like Hilda Zacarias has racked up some more supporters. My informants tell me that the Santa Maria Police Officers' Assocation voted this week to endorse Zacarias for election to the Santa Maria City Council in November.
The POA held a Santa Maria City Council candidates' night on October 9, 2006. As I understand it, each candidate was interviewed separately by the POA. Thus no candidate had the advantage to rebut or counter what other candidates might have previously presented to the members.
It's interesting that the POA didn't have trouble getting current City Councilman Marty Mariscal to attend their forum, as the League of Women Voters did for their candidates' night two weeks ago.
Guess it's easier to shine on a club full of women than it is a room full of cops.
(Breaking news: The union for the City of Santa Maria employees (S E I U) has also endorsed Hilda Zacarias for city council. Let me repeat: the employees of the City of Santa Maria are not endorsing current encumbents Marty Mariscal and Alice Patino for re-election. And neither is the Santa Maria Times. The message from these decisions is loud and clear.)
