How very interesting this year's Santa Maria City Council race is. Now we have an October 22nd, 2006, letter to the editor in the Santa Maria Times from the Santa Maria Police Officers' Association regarding challenger Joan Leon.
After noting that the POA held a candidates' night on October 9th, they state that Joan Leon, "the candidate who did not request an endorsement, came closest to seeing the same issues facing our city we see as a law enforcement organization."
Continuing, they note that, "Leon presented creative and novel solutions to address these issues. Her grass-roots approach to growth in population, housing and business makes her ideas and philosophies a breath of fresh air to a city in need of new leadership to better prepare for the future."
They finish with the statement that, "Although Joan Leon would not accept an endorsement, the members unanimously (emphasis added) voted to recognize her as a valid candidate for City Council."
So the POA gave an endorsement to someone not requesting one -- and the Santa Maria Times withheld its endorsement of the encumbents, which it normally gives.
Such an interesting election year.
